Acorn men and chestnut chaps

acorns

Although summer is still my favourite season, autumn is not too bad if you consider a beautiful walk in a forest filled with mushrooms, beautifully coloured leaves and plenty of nuts to collect!
Last weekend was nice and sunny so we took our little family to the south of the Netherlands, where the forests are beautiful. We collected a basket full of pine-cones, acorns and chestnuts. And plenty of leaves!
Back home, we created this little chestnut family. The old-fashioned way, just with some wooden skewers and a drop of glue!
Cute, don’t you think?

Perfect. I remember making things like this when I was a kid & loved it. Sometimes simple is just the best way to go. The nature walk finding the supplies is also part of the “toy.”

takes me back to my childhood! Brilliant will make some with our little one this weekend. Good for a rainy day (as we have soooo many here in London!).

And when Autumn is over, you can try this with corks -another good excuse to drink wine ;-)

I still pause when I walk by some ripe chestnuts on a tree or one the ground… When we were kids you never passed a large chestnut by. Instead you threw it in your pocket, and when you got home you carefully drilled a hole through it so as to maintain the nut’s rigidity and set it to slowly dry and harden on the windowsill.

Once dry we’d tie strings through them in order to have chestnut fights. Ahhhhh good times.
